Reconstruction of a Roman Camp – The Castellum Felix Project

Castellum Felix is a reconstruction of a Roman fortress near the village of Nersingen in Germany, discovered by archaeologists in 1982. The project is being created by enthusiasts from the GEMINA z.s. association, with the utmost care for historical authenticity. The name Felix, meaning “joyful” or “fortunate”, reflects both our own spirit and that of ancient Rome. This unique project serves as a permanent home for our historical group, a living museum for visitors, and a platform for academic research into everyday Roman military life.

Why Were Roman Camps Important?

Marching camps were a key element in the success of the Roman army. Their standardized layout, defensive features, and rapid construction allowed the legions to operate effectively across vast territories. The Castellum Felix project brings these principles back to life and presents them to the public in a modern educational context.

A unique project to build a fully functional Roman fort near Turnov is currently underway. Here you can find the latest updates on the project:

Phase 1

The first step is to prepare the terrain for the camp. The terrain is cleared, leveled, and the soil is compacted. On the perimeter of the platform, the foundations of an earthen wall of considerable height will be built, which will serve as the foundation for the fortification.

Phase 2

Pokračovat budeme výstavbou pochodového tábora římských legií na tažení. Vojenské stany slouží jako ubytování pro jednotlivá contubernia (družstva) a spolu s centrálním důstojnickým stanem tvoří základní strukturu a uspořádání tábora

Phase 3

V další fázi se tábor promění v opevněné místo. Jsou zvednuty zemní valy, zpevněny chodníky a cimbuřím. Hlavní brána je korunována strážní věží. vzniká tak obranná pohraniční základna.

Phase 4

Po zajištění místa jsou dočasné stany nahrazeny trvalými ubytováním pro vojáky - postaveným z proutí a mazaniny, pokrytým dřevěnou sedlovou střechou. Tábor se nyní přesouvá z mobilního zařízení do statického vojenského tábora, kde jsou celoročně ubytováni vojáci.

Phase 5

Závěrečná fáze rozšiřuje funkčnost a realismus. Naproti kasárnám jsou přidány stáje a sklad, které zajišťují potřeby jízdy a zásobovací logistiky. Latrína, postavená v zadní části tábora, doplňuje základní potřeby každodenního římského vojenského života.
